Save Williamstown group holds mock evacuation drill

“........HUNDREDS of people in high-visibility clothing and carrying safety equipment filled Williamstown streets to highlight the difficulties evacuating the community during an emergency.
About 200 people gathered at the Williamstown Botancial Gardens, the Stags Head Hotel and at the cannons on The Strand at 11am yesterday.
They then walked to Robertson Reserve where Police and Corrections Minister and Williamstown MP Wade Noonan and Greens MP Colleen Hartland spoke Save Williamstown spokesman Godfrey Moase said the drill did not claim to mimic what would happen in the event of a real emergency.
“Rather it aimed to draw attention to the present lack of clear rules and processes around major hazard facilities and residential development,” he said.
Save Williamstown was formed to oppose a major residential development, including more than 800 high-rise apartments and townhouses, on the site of the former Port Phillip Woollen Mills factory near the Mobil tank farm and wharf.
Mobil has already warned the residential development would be too close to the tank farm and could impede the safe evacuation of residents in an emergency.
The State Government recently announced the formation of an advisory committee to consider the development of residential buildings near major hazard facilities, eight of which are in Hobsons Bay.....”
