Media Release : Save Williamstown No 2
Public Rally 2pm Sunday June 28th at Commonwealth Reserve, Nelson Place, Williamstown
Save Williamstown has organised a public rally for this Sunday to oppose application C75 to amend the
Hobsons Bay Planning Scheme.
Organisers expect a considerable turnout given that approximately 500 concerned citizens voted unanimously
to oppose the proposed amendment at a public meeting held at 9am on Saturday 6th June 2009.
There is a high degree of anger within the community about the application, particularly with the news that the
developer's application may threaten jobs in the midst of the downturn. Local residents are highly concerned
that both BAE Systems and the Port of Melbourne Authority have expressed doubt about the “ongoing viability
of their local operations” to Williamstown member, Wade Noonan. Save Williamstown also understands that
Mobil is considering it's own position on the development proposal.
“The last thing this community needs is news that permanent decent jobs have been threatened due to a
desire to make a quick profit.” Said Save Williamstown spokesperson, Godfrey Moase.
The rally will be a colourful public spectacle with some interesting creative twists.
Amendment Application C75
The main principles of the proposed amendment is to rezone industrial land to residential and to
increase height limits from 3 storeys to 46.5 metres (12-16 storeys) in the area adjacent to Nelson
Place, Kanowna Street, Cecil Street and Ann Street near Point Gellibrand in Williamstown. The
applicant is Urbis.
